A controversial cyber bill, CISA, which at one time was considered a zombie bill, has passed the US Senate on Oct 27, 2015.

What does this mean for your business in New Orleans?

CISA

The bill is stated to improve United States’ cybersecurity through the enhanced collaboration and sharing of information about cyber security to prevent and respond to cyber security threats. Privacy critics have protested that CISA would create a legal framework for companies to closely monitor internet users even more and share that data with government agencies.

These privacy concerns were repeated by Senator Ron Wyden, who was the only member of the Senate’s intelligence committee to vote against the bill, in a public statement. “If information-sharing legislation does not include adequate privacy protections, then that’s not a cybersecurity bill – it’s a surveillance bill by another name,” he wrote. “It makes sense to encourage private firms to share information about cybersecurity threats. But this information sharing is only acceptable if there are strong protections for the privacy rights of law-abiding American citizens.”

With privacy concerns aside, though, this bill could be a good first step.  It’s not going to prevent all cyberattacks or penetrations, but it will allow companies to share information about cyber threats they see and the required defensive implementations to protect their networks.

Did you know that when the Office of Personnel Management was hacked recently, that more than 21 million Americans had their personal information stolen?

“At some point, we need to stop just hearing about cyber-attacks that steal our most valuable secrets and our most private information, and actually do something to stop them,” Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Ca.), the committee’s ranking Democrat, said on the House floor.
